A Wisconsin man was killed Wednesday after he shot at law enforcement and civilian vehicles during a pursuit that began when he fled a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10, authorities said.
James Douglas McMillan, 33, of Greenfield, Wisconsin, was the only occupant of the vehicle. He died after Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and other officers returned fire, according to an initial investigation.
The chase started around 10:30 a.m. CT when McMillan sped away from the checkpoint in Sierra Blanca after a Border Patrol drug-detection dog alerted to his vehicle and agents ordered him to pull over for a secondary inspection.
During the chase, McMillan fired out the window at responding officers and indiscriminately at passing civilian cars. Law enforcement returned fire. DPS troopers then used a precision immobilization technique maneuver to stop the vehicle.
McMillan barricaded himself inside the vehicle and later pointed a weapon at officers, who shot him, authorities said. No law enforcement officers or civilians were injured.
The vehicle McMillan was driving had been reported stolen in Arizona, the investigation found.
The Texas Rangers are leading the active probe with assistance from the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol. No further details were released.
