A 62-year-old man fatally shot his wife and wounded his adult son during a domestic dispute before firing at police and taking his own life, authorities said.

The Grand Prairie Police Department responded around 10 p.m. on Sunday to a home in the 1600 block of Avenue B after the son, shot in the face while trying to intervene in his parents’ argument, ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

Officers set up a perimeter and tried multiple times to contact the father without success. Knowing the mother remained inside, tactical officers forced open the front door to reach her.

The man immediately began shooting a rifle at them, prompting police to return fire. One officer sustained minor injuries from ricochet gunfire and was hospitalized for treatment. No other officers were hurt.

The suspect then retreated deeper into the home. Once SWAT officers entered, they found the mother dead in a bedroom from gunshot wounds and the father deceased in a bathroom from a self-inflicted wound.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The son was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. Names of those involved have not been released, pending notification from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team is conducting an independent investigation, while Grand Prairie’s Office of Professional Standards handles an administrative review.
