A pair of alleged smugglers were arrested on May 6 after Border Patrol agents foiled their attempt to sneak two migrants through a checkpoint near Carrizo Springs, Texas.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief for the Del Rio Sector posted to X: “Carrizo Springs agents apprehended a couple smugglers during checkpoint operations. They tried to sneak 2 illegal aliens through the checkpoint, but our agents weren’t fooled so easily. They will now face the consequences.”

The notice on the image warns that the suspects will be prosecuted under 8 U.S.C. 1324, the federal statute against alien smuggling. The law carries penalties of up to 20 years in prison—escalating to life sentences if the smuggling results in death—although authorities have not specified exact charges.

There have been federal operations related to immigration in Carrizo Springs for years. A fact sheet on the Office of Refugee Resettlement website states, “On October 13, 2023, HHS opened the ICF Dimmit County Children’s Center in Carrizo Springs, Texas. The facility provides shelter for unaccompanied alien children, boys and girls, 13 to 17 years old. As of April 14, 2024, the site has had no children in care, but it must remain ready to resume operations and accept children within four weeks, if needed.”

Carrizo Springs, located about 120 miles southwest of San Antonio, is the county seat of Dimmit County and home to roughly 5,000 residents.

This arrest follows a May 4 incident at the Brackettville Station, where agents apprehended an individual who attempted to outpace officers on an electric bicycle, The Dallas Express previously reported. The U.S. Border Patrol Chief for the Del Rio Sector posted to X that the“Brackettville Station recently caught an illegal alien trying to evade agents after he crossed into our country. This subject thought he could outrun and outsmart agents by using an electric bike and other supplies. It didn’t work, and he now faces prosecution under 8 USC 1325.”
