An arrest warrant affidavit recently released by Fort Worth police states that the fatal shooting of Chin “Jin” Shin in August began with a fender-bender incident.

On the morning of August 15, Fort Worth police responded to the 2500 block of University Drive, located just south of Interstate 30, where Shin was found lying on the east side of the street and pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers were told that the driver who caused the accident was allegedly beaten up by multiple people. Two people had also allegedly pointed guns at each other, according to the affidavit.

Video surveillance from the area showed a silver Hyundai sitting at a red light at the intersection of University Drive and I-30. A white Jeep is then seen rolling forward from a stopped position hitting the Hyundai from the back.

Police stated in the affidavit that 3 women got out of the Hyundai, boxed Shin into the driver’s door, and started talking to him. However, a Chrysler drove up and blocked Shin’s Jeep. Another man and woman got out of their car and approached Shin from the west side.

Two other cars arrived shortly after. A man dressed in black got out of one and joined the people gathering around Shin. A total of 8 people were surrounding Shin and his vehicle.

An argument soon turned physical when someone allegedly hit Shin in the back of the head, according to police. He walked away as multiple people opened his car and leaned in.

Shin came back and attempted to get into the driver’s side of his car from a less crowded direction, but a member of the group stopped him.

Shin allegedly managed to get a handgun from his car and began walking to the other side of the street. A man, police identified as Markynn Dmorous West, had allegedly taken a handgun from the trunk of his car while Shin was walking back to his vehicle. 

As Shin was approaching his car, West stepped out from the back of one of the cars allegedly firing multiple shots at Shin. Shin moved toward the passenger side of the car to dodge the shots, while West allegedly continued firing rounds, police say in the affidavit.

The footage shows Shin getting out of the car and running across the street, which was the last of the incident surveillance footage. Police say Shin’s body was found just beyond the spot where he was last captured on camera.

West, 28, was arrested on September 7, on a murder charge in connection with the killing. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

The names of the other individuals at the scene are unknown as police redacted them from the affidavit. It is not clear if any other person is facing charges related to the incident.

Shin owned Encore Family Karaoke located at 11433 Goodnight Lane in Dallas and was a co-owner of DanSungSa at 11407 Emerald Street, Dallas. He is described by friends and family as a kind, supportive, generous, and free-spirited man. He was also seen as a pillar of the Asian community in Dallas as friends and family say he was committed to giving back.

The 43-year-old is survived by his 14-year-old daughter, Ella.

“I am broken that he was robbed of his life like this and Ella and I are robbed. Ella is robbed of a father and all that she could have with him,” Shin’s former partner, May Naing Joe, told The Dallas Morning News.

A GoFundMe account was set up to cover Shin’s funeral expenses and legal fees as his family seeks a “thorough investigation and appropriate justice.”

“Jin Shin was a fantastic human being. I use the word fantastic, because not only was it his favorite adjective to use, but it is also the best word to describe him,” the GoFundMe website reads.

The fundraising effort has received more than $85,000 in donations, and as stated on the website, any leftover funds will be transferred to his daughter, Ella.
