A 35-year-old McKinney man has been booked into the Collin County Jail on a murder charge following his arrest by Texas state troopers on August 7.
Jeremiah Garcia Patterson was taken into custody on a warrant issued in McKinney, according to Collin County jail records.
Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jessia Pond told The Dallas Express that Patterson was later transferred to the Collin County Jail, where records show he is being held on a $1 million bond for first-degree felony murder.
A blog post on the Texas Trial Attorney website explains capital murder (first-degree murder) as “the most serious homicide charge in the state, capital murder carries the most severe penalties possible for such a charge: either the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
Records available on the Collin County website reveal that an affidavit of indigency had been filed for Patterson on August 8, indicating that he is unable to afford legal proceedings. In cases like these, courts typically waive certain legal fees, and the defendant receives a public defender.
The Dallas Express attempted multiple times to reach the Collin County clerk’s office via telephone to obtain the arrest warrant affidavit, but received no response. A Texas Public Information Act request has since been filed for the document, though it may be some time before further details are released.
According to jail records, Patterson was born in 1989, is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. No information has been made public about the victim in the case or the events leading up to Patterson’s arrest.
The alleged murder adds to a string of violent incidents in the Dallas–Fort Worth area this summer. Earlier this week, Dallas police reported that 37-year-old Justin Edwards died after being stabbed on Adleta Boulevard around 3:25 a.m. Monday. Dallas Fire-Rescue found Edwards at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, The Dallas Express reported.
In late July, a woman named Kubra Zafer was found dead in a closet in McKinney. Her husband, Eslam Said Mohamed, was later arrested on murder charges, The Dallas Express previously reported.
