A Collin County man now charged with murder had at least two dozen prior criminal cases in the county over the past 17 years, including several violent crime charges that were later dismissed, according to court records.
ANTHONY CHAMPAGNE NORMAN
Collin County jail records list the defendant as Anthony Champagne Norman, 35, who was booked on November 3 on a first-degree felony murder charge and a separate charge of possession of a controlled substance under 28 grams. Norman is currently being held with no listed bond on the murder count.
His jail record lists multiple aliases, including “Big Man,” and notes tattoos on his face, neck, and arms. His booking photograph appears to show a pink or red marking or hair coloration on the top of his mostly buzzed head.
The Dallas Express reached out to the Collin County District Clerk’s Office for the arrest warrant affidavit tied to the murder charge. A records officer responded in an email that the executed warrant return had not yet been filed, stating, “Mr. Norman was picked up on an arrest warrant and we have not received the executed warrant back yet from the jail… This may still take a few days for us to receive it so please resubmit your request later next week.”
Norman has appeared in at least 24 criminal case records in Collin County since 2008, according to the county’s Criminal Case Records Search. Twenty-four of those cases list his name as “Anthony Champagne Norman,” while four others list a defendant by the name of “Anthony Norman.” The listings include cases that ended in convictions and dismissals. Court records indicate Norman was previously found guilty or pleaded guilty in matters including possession of a controlled substance under one gram and driving with an invalid license.
However, between 2019 and 2023, Norman also faced five violent crime charges that were dismissed, according to county records.
Those cases include allegations of injury to a child, elderly, or disabled person with intent to cause bodily injury; assault of a family or household member by impeding breath or circulation; assault causing bodily injury to a family member; and two aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges.
The Dallas Express reached out to Judicial Officer Tom Nowak, who presided over the dismissal of the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, and to Judicial Officer David Waddill, who presided over the dismissal of a separate charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member in 2024, to ask why the charges were dismissed. The outlet did not immediately receive responses in either case.
Norman’s most recent resolved case before the murder charge occurred earlier this year in the 296th District Court. In that case, Norman pleaded guilty in July to possession of a controlled substance under one gram and was sentenced to 180 days of state jail, with credit given for 163 days of time served. Court records indicate he was released in early August.
A civil court record indicates that Norman was a defendant in an eviction case in October of 2024, but the “Defendant Failed to Appear” for proceedings.
Norman remained in custody as of Friday on the murder charge, according to the Collin County jail roster on the Sheriff’s app. No attorney is currently listed in the jail’s public report for the murder case.
The Dallas Express will continue to seek the arrest warrant affidavit, court filings, and further comment from judicial officials as they become available.
