A Carrollton man was jailed on a capital murder charge after an arrest just after midnight this week.

Rayvon D. Boston, 31, was booked into the Denton County Jail at 12:00 a.m. January 21, following an arrest by the Carrollton Police Department, according to inmate booking information from the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.

Jail records list the charge as capital murder by terror threat or other felony.

No bond or release date was listed as of publication.

Public court records in Denton County did not yet show a case file for Boston, and a search of the county’s criminal court database did not reflect any prior cases involving him in that jurisdiction.

Authorities have not released details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing, the identity of the victim, or what specific facts prosecutors may rely on to support the capital murder allegation.

Capital murder is the most serious homicide charge under Texas law and carries the possibility of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if a defendant is convicted and prosecutors seek that punishment, according to the Texas Penal Code.

The charge can apply in a range of circumstances, including murders committed during certain felonies or those involving terroristic threats intended to intimidate or coerce a broader population, as outlined in state statute.

Texas law distinguishes between murder and capital murder based on aggravating factors.

Murder is generally charged as a first-degree felony, punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison. Capital murder, by contrast, is classified as a capital felony, with sentencing options limited to life imprisonment or death for defendants who were adults at the time of the alleged offense, according to DFW lawyer Tim Clancy’s legal blog.

Boston’s background includes a brief athletic history in North Texas.

An entry on the MaxPreps website indicates that a Rayvon Boston was a senior at W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas during the 2013 football season, where he played varsity football as a wide receiver and defensive back, according to that site.

Carrollton police had not publicly responded to requests for additional information about the arrest from The Dallas Express, including whether investigators believe the alleged offense involved a terroristic threat or another qualifying felony that would elevate the charge to capital murder. It was also not clear whether Boston has retained legal counsel.

The Denton County Sheriff’s Office booking log lists Boston as a Black male, born December 6, 1994, standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 178 pounds. He remains housed in the jail’s MOH unit, according to the sheriff’s office app.
