A Massachusetts middle school librarian was arrested on federal charges of distributing child pornography after an FBI investigation linked him to an encrypted online group, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Scott McGinley, 55, who worked at Williams and Glenbrook Middle Schools in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, turned himself in to authorities. A Department of Justice complaint alleged he admitted a sexual preference for young boys while communicating with undercover agents posing as group members.
During a search of his home on August 8, investigators seized multiple electronic devices and over 100 files depicting child sexual abuse material, along with a locked Pelican case in the basement. Prosecutors said the case contained children’s clothing, boys’ underwear, diapers, bedding, a Santa costume, diaper cream, and applesauce packets.
McGinley is charged with one count of distributing child pornography, a federal offense punishable by a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 20 years in prison, at least five years to life of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. He made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Katherine A. Robertson.
The arrest has raised concerns in the Western Massachusetts community about student safety and staff screening procedures. Federal authorities said the investigation is ongoing as they work to identify other potential victims and participants in the online group.
Federal officials reminded the public that McGinley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
