A Texas man drew a life sentence after pleading guilty to capital murder in the death of a 4-year-old girl in Perryton, located in the Texas Panhandle area.
Humberto Martinez admitted to strangling Hope Raley in 2022 and then igniting a house fire to conceal the killing. He pleaded guilty on March 4 in Ochiltree County, and two days later, a judge handed down the life without parole sentence.
Firefighters responding to the blaze discovered Raley inside. The medical examiner ruled strangulation caused her death before anyone set the fire.
Rescuers located Martinez hiding in a crawlspace under the structure. He was the last person seen with Raley.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office ruled that the fire was intentional. Officials said Martinez sought hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, then confessed to Raley’s killing upon release.
“Investigations like this demonstrate the critical role the SFMO plays in uncovering the facts behind suspicious fires,” State Fire Marshal Debra Knight said. “Our team’s work helped reveal the truth in a complex and tragic case, bringing justice and closure to the victim’s family.”
The child was under the care of the homeowners when she was killed, PEOPLE reported. The motive for the murder, and Martinez’s relationship with the child and the homeowners, is unclear.
“Martinez will never again know life as a free man,” Ochiltree County Attorney Joe Meraz told the High Plains Observer following the sentencing. “The investigation and prosecution of Hope’s murder was made possible through the hard work of local and state-wide agencies.”
He added that Hope Raley was known to be “loving and full of life. She has been and will continue to be missed by many.”
