When Dallas police saw a man with a knife Wednesday morning, they told him to drop it – but he didn’t.

Dallas police responded to a call about a man “in the street” with a knife near 3000 Fairview Ave., in the southeastern Owenwood neighborhood, close to 9:55 a.m., according to the release. He was “kicking on the door of a residence and putting the knife to his neck.”

“Officers arrived and gave the man loud verbal commands to drop the knife,” the release said. “The man did not drop the knife.”

The officers used “less-lethal” force, but this was unsuccessful. They gave him more commands.

“The man advanced towards one of the officers, at which time the officer fired their duty pistol, hitting the man,” the release said.

Police gave him “medical aid,” including CPR, until Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived at the scene. Responders brought him to a hospital, where he died. No officers were injured during the encounter.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s office “responded to the scene,” and is planning to conduct its “own investigation,” according to the release. The Office of Community Police Oversight also responded.

The Dallas Express asked the department for comment, but Officer Corbin Rubinson said, “All of the available information has been released.”

The Dallas-Fort Worth area has been grappling with numerous violent crimes in recent weeks.

The Fort Worth Police Department responded to a deadly shooting on July 6, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. In Dallas, police responded to a similar fatal shooting the day before – July 5. That same day, an officer killed a shooter who reportedly wounded several people downtown. The city has seen at least 13 murders in June alone.
