A man accused of killing a woman inside a Lewisville, Texas, hotel and firing at responding officers was arrested early Sunday by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant issued out of Lewisville, officials said.
Ilan Carroll, 32, was taken into custody around midnight on October 5, according to county records. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault against a public servant, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to Lewisville police, the case stems from an October 2 standoff at the Budget Suites of America in the 2100 block of South State Highway 121 Business. Officers responded to reports of a suicidal man threatening others and “actively threatening to kill people around him.”
A department release stated that when officers arrived, the suspect “was confirmed to be armed with a handgun and fired at police officers.” Officers apparently did not initially return fire because “the suspect disappeared into the building.” Later, officers exchanged gunfire with the man after he allegedly struck an armored vehicle.
The standoff lasted several hours before the suspect surrendered shortly after 8 a.m. “He appears to have gunshot injuries, but it is not known if they were self-inflicted or from the officers’ gunfire,” the release said. Inside the room, officers found a deceased woman, whose identity was not released.
Officer Tre Mathis, the Lewisville Police Department’s public information officer, told The Dallas Express in an email that Carroll “has been charged and arraigned” but “is still receiving medical treatment and has not yet been booked into any jail.” In a follow-up, Mathis clarified that “because the warrant was filed through Denton County and Carroll was arraigned, Denton County Sheriff’s Office is watching over him while he still receives medical attention. He has been in custody the whole time, but not incarcerated.”
Denton County Sheriff’s Captain Hinojosa confirmed that his office executed the arrest warrant from Lewisville.
No officers were injured in the shooting, and Lewisville police said the Texas Rangers are conducting a criminal investigation into the use of deadly force, while the department’s Internal Affairs Unit is reviewing whether officers’ actions complied with policy. ”
Having both administrative and criminal reviews is standard procedure in these circumstances,” the media release said.
Carroll remained under guard at a medical facility as of Tuesday, according to both agencies.
