The Department of War has authorized the activation of up to 350 Louisiana National Guard members to support federal law enforcement operations in New Orleans and other metropolitan areas of the state, according to a Pentagon statement.
The activation, approved December 23, places Guard members on Title 32 status through February 28, 2026, keeping them under the command and control of Gov. Jeff Landry while allowing them to assist federal agencies.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said the Guard members will support federal law enforcement partners, including the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, as they enforce federal law and address high rates of violent crime.
“Operating under Governor Landry’s command and control, this mission will directly enhance the safety of Louisiana’s residents and the enforcement of federal laws,” Parnell said. He added that the deployment reaffirms the Department of War’s commitment to interagency cooperation and public safety.
Under Title 32, National Guard members remain under state authority while receiving federal funding and may provide support roles to law enforcement agencies. Pentagon officials did not specify the exact duties Guard members will perform.
