One person is dead after a shooting at a Fort Worth apartment complex Thursday evening that led to a SWAT team being called in, according to Fort Worth police.
At 8:16 p.m. on May 19, officers responded to a report of shots fired near The Woodlands Apartment Homes at 1060 Woodlands Circle.
Police said that a physical altercation broke out in the parking lot, leading to at least two men pulling firearms and shooting at each other.
The reasons for the altercation, how the men knew each other, and why the situation escalated to gun violence have not been revealed by the police at this time.
Two men were taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. One of the men was pronounced dead from his injuries early Friday morning. The other was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
KRLD News Radio reports Fort Worth police officers called the Arlington SWAT team and surrounded an apartment at the complex.
After several hours, the SWAT officers descended on the apartment. They used flash-bang grenades, non-lethal explosives that emanate bright lights and loud sounds meant to confuse and disorient suspects or cause minor injuries. This helps law enforcement to apprehend suspects more easily and lowers their risk of being attacked by those they are attempting to arrest.
After entering, SWAT officers found no one inside. Police said they entered the apartment and cleared it just before 4 a.m. on Friday morning.
It is unclear whether this means the suspected shooter managed to escape or was able to hide inside the apartment undetected by officers.
Fort Worth police have released only limited details at this time. The names of the men involved also remain unknown.
