Police officers shot and killed a homicide suspect on Monday during a traffic stop in Southlake.
The Southlake Police Department claimed in a press release that the man pointed a gun at officers.
The incident occurred near Carroll Avenue, close to the eastbound entrance for Texas 114. Police had put up yellow police tape across the perimeter and had at least five police cars cordoning off the immediate area.
Nearby, a van had a crack in the windshield from a bullet hole. Taylor Lee, the van’s owner, told The Dallas Express that it was a police officer’s bullet that made the hole.
“The bullet is still in there,” Lee said.
Lee said he was working atop a nearby roof doing air conditioning repairs when he heard gunshots.
Jay Sanford was also working on the same roof. He showed The Dallas Express videos on his phone of police officers attempting to give the homicide suspect CPR as he lay shot on the ground.
“It’s crazy,” Sanford said. “We saw a bunch of police officers driving very slow, and then they turned in here, and we were like, what’s going on? We heard the cops say ‘get out of the car,’ and then all we heard was pop, pop, pop.”
Southlake Police Chief James Brandon said during a press conference that the incident started when North Richland Hills police requested assistance regarding a homicide that occurred earlier that day.
Brandon said the officers conducted a traffic stop when the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the officers. Four police officers fired at the man, he said. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police claimed a handgun was found at the scene. It is unknown whether the suspect fired at the officers.
Brandon said the officers were put on administrative leave per department guidelines and that the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
