Following an exchange of gunfire with Rockwall police, a suspected kidnapper was fatally shot at a home on Thursday night, police said.
The incident involved law enforcement officers from Dallas, Fort Worth, and Rockwall. The situation unfolded over the span of roughly an hour and a half.
Just before 7 p.m., Rockwall police officers were asked to do a welfare check at the behest of the Fort Worth Police Department. They were informed by Fort Worth police that the individual involved in the welfare check was potentially a kidnapping suspect.
Then at around 7:30 p.m., Dallas police contacted law enforcement officials in Rockwall about a reported stabbing in Dallas that involved the same individual cited by Fort Worth police.
Dallas police informed officials in Rockwall that a man punched and stabbed a woman as she got out of her car. The man then stole the car, driving off with two children still inside the vehicle.
Nearly an hour later, at 8:20 p.m., Rockwall police arrived at the 300 block of Summerhill Drive. They found the suspect outside.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan May, fired a gun at Rockwall police when they attempted to make contact with him.
Police returned fire, fatally striking May. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
No officers sustained any injuries, according to police.
The alleged kidnapping victims turned out to have been found at a home in a nearby city. They were unharmed.
The Texas Rangers are currently investigating the incident.
The Dallas Express reached out to the Rockwall Police Department for comment on the matter but has not received a response at the time of writing.
