Fort Worth police arrested a man on Tuesday who had been shot by Haltom City police following a car chase.

The car chase began around 10:45 p.m. on July 25, when officers attempted to stop the suspect for failing to yield on the 4200 block of Creech Street, near Higgins Lane in Haltom City, according to a press release by the Haltom City Police Department.

Authorities said the driver refused the officers’ order to pull over, leading Haltom City police officers on a car chase that took them west to Fort Worth, where he finally stopped on the 2700 block of NE 28th Street.

After exiting the vehicle, the suspect allegedly pointed a rifle at the officers and fired it at them. The officers, who said they were “fearing for their lives,” returned fire.

The suspect then reportedly managed to escape the exchange of gunfire on foot, and Haltom City officers lost sight of him as he fled. A search followed.

Fort Worth police officers eventually apprehended the suspect at 3:50 a.m., July 26, after he was allegedly discovered burglarizing a residence on the 2200 block of Blandin Street in Fort Worth, according to Haltom City police.

As officers arrested the suspect, they discovered that he had a “minor injury” to his upper torso that was likely caused by the exchange of gunfire between himself and the Haltom City police officers who initially pursued him.

The involved officers involved in the shootout are currently on paid administrative leave, per department policy, and the Fort Worth Police Department’s Major Case Unit is investigating the incident.

According to the press release, the suspect is charged with evading arrest or detention, a state jail felony, and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, a first-degree felony.

As of Monday, August 1, neither police nor court officials have disclosed the suspect’s identity. It is not clear if he had an attorney, and his bail conditions have not been revealed.
