Police in Fort Worth arrested a 76-year-old man on Sunday after he allegedly shot his girlfriend’s 24-year-old son over an argument.

Murphy L. Ward was arrested just after 6 p.m. on August 15 and booked into jail around four hours later. He faced a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers from the Fort Worth Police Department, with firefighters and MedStar crews, responded to the Fairview Apartments in the 3300 block of Lackland Road at about 6 p.m. on Sunday following a report of a shooting incident.

Upon arrival, officers and emergency response crews found an adult man who had been shot once in the back, according to CBS 11 News. The victim told police he had been arguing with his mother’s boyfriend in the apartment complex’s parking lot.

Police said Ward allegedly took out his weapon and fired once, hitting the victim in the back. The suspect remained on the scene when police arrived.

The victim, whom The Fort Worth Star-Telegram described as a 24-year-old man from Alvarado, was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in stable condition.

Police did not provide any information on what led to the argument between both men.

It is not clear whether the suspect had an attorney. Detectives from the gun and family violence units were notified of the incident.
