A Denton Landlord was arrested after a viral video surfaced of him threatening a tenant with a gun last month, according to a news release.

The landlord, identified as 68-year-old Phillip Young, was arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Family Violence after investigating an incident involving a landlord and tenant living in the same residence.

On September 9, Denton Police responded to a civil disturbance call that occurred in the 2000 block of Scripture Street at 12:42 p.m.

Young claimed that his tenant was attempting to use the kitchen of their shared residence without having paid for kitchen privileges. Officers spoke with both parties and then left after determining no criminal offense had occurred.

Later in the same day, at 4:39 p.m., officers were again called to the same residence when the tenant reported Young was threatening him with a gun.

Officers spoke with both Young and the tenant separately when they arrived on the scene, and the tenant reported that Young was holding a handgun and warning him not to go into the kitchen.

Young denied threatening the tenant and refused to allow officers to see or secure the firearm, according to police.

When Denton Detectives received the case, they interviewed both Young and the tenant again, and the tenant told detectives that “Young’s actions placed him in fear, and he felt threatened and would assist in prosecution if charges were filed.”

Young said that he did not intend on shooting the tenant during this interaction, according to police, but in an email sent to detectives on September 26, he admitted he did think about shooting the tenant during the incident.

In an interview with a local news outlet, Young said, “I was desperate and wanted him to think I was crazy.”

Young was booked and taken to the Denton City Jail and posted a bond of $10,000 on Wednesday, according to jail records.

Be careful who you let live in your house. Even the best of friends can get on each other’s nerves.
