A routine traffic stop in Lewisville led to the seizure of 285 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of a 31-year-old man.
Officer J. Slaughter of the Lewisville Police Department pulled over a vehicle driven by Deyu Huang on Sunday for expired registration and lack of insurance, violations of the Texas Transportation Code. After informing Huang, a resident of Houston, that the vehicle would be towed per department policy, Slaughter detected the odor of unburnt marijuana during an inventory of the vehicle, providing probable cause for a search.
With assistance from Officer J. Acosta, Slaughter discovered 285 pounds of marijuana concealed in a sealed compartment within the vehicle. Huang was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana between 50 and 2,000 pounds, a second-degree felony. He is being held in Denton County Jail on a $35,000 bond.
The Lewisville Police Department praised the officers’ efforts in a Facebook post, stating, “Please join us in recognizing Officer Slaughter’s vigilance and dedication to keeping Lewisville safe!”
The post noted that the seizure ensured the drugs “will never make it to the streets of our community.”
