In a dramatic incident at the Killeen Mall on Saturday evening, a man was shot and killed by law enforcement after leading officers on a high-speed chase.
Authorities reported that around 5 p.m., the suspect drove through the glass entrance of JCPenney, striking several individuals inside the store and causing significant injuries to five of them, reported Fox 4 KDFW.
Emergency responders rushed four victims to the hospital while a fifth made their way to seek medical attention. After crashing his vehicle into the mall, the man exited his truck and attempted to flee on foot. In response to the escalating situation, multiple law enforcement agencies opened fire, resulting in his death.
The Killeen Police Department followed up by issuing the following statement on Facebook: “Sgt. Washko with the Department of [Public] Safety advised that a call came in about an erratic driver in a black pickup truck in Temple. A DPS Trooper located the pickup truck traveling westbound on I-14 and a pursuit ensued. The suspect then drove through the JCPenney south entrance at the Killeen Mall, injuring 5 people. They were all transported to local hospitals. The threat was stopped inside the mall by several officers. The male suspect is deceased. Please be advised, that this was not an active shooter. The Texas Rangers will be conducting an investigation and DPS will be the lead agency on this incident.”
