Authorities are searching for a middle school student suspected of fatally shooting an adult man Saturday night following an altercation, prompting a local school district to bar visitors from three campuses as a safety measure.

Lavon police responded around 8:50 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of Wellington Drive in the Crestridge Meadows subdivision. Officers found the victim with several gunshot wounds; he was taken to a hospital but did not survive.

The juvenile suspect fled before police arrived and remains at large. The student’s name is withheld due to age.

Community Independent School District identified the suspect on Sunday as enrolled at Community Trails Middle School, noting the student had not attended since November 11.

Officials described the incident as targeted, with no ongoing threat to the public or schools.

“While the District does not believe this student poses a threat to any campus, we take the safety and security of our students and staff seriously,” the district said in a statement, per CBS News.

Until an arrest is made, Community Trails Middle School, Dodson Elementary School, and NeSmith Elementary School will prohibit visitors and add extra security beyond the existing armed officers.

Classes will proceed normally at the sites.

Police urge anyone with tips or footage to text LAVONPD to 847411 anonymously.

The victim’s name awaits confirmation from the medical examiner; details on the dispute or any connection to the suspect have not been released.
