Garland Police verified they are still investigating a double shooting at a hotel on the 6200 block of Broadway Blvd. after 7:30 p.m. on June 2.

Private investigators were at the hotel, aided by Garland Police, serving a felony warrant on 33-year-old Juan Carlos Lopez of Little Elm for sexual assault of a child when gunfire erupted, a press release states.

After the shot was fired, the press release indicates that Garland Police discovered that a private investigator, still unnamed, was fatally wounded.

The press release continues saying officers encountered an armed Lopez in one of the motel rooms. When officers fired at Lopez, they delivered a fatal wound, the press release states.

Officers then transported the wounded investigator to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, according to the press release.

The press release further indicates that the three Garland Police Officers involved will be placed on administrative leave following departmental policy.

“We left the scene somewhere around 2 a.m. this morning,” said Garland Police Department Public Information Officer Felicia Jones mid-morning on June 3. “As of now, this is still an ongoing investigation.”

The identity of the deceased private investigator will not be released until notification of next of kin.

Outside the hotel Friday morning, there were no signs of the fatal shooting just hours before. Customers were milling around outside but not talking. Yellow crime scene tape was balled up in the trash can outside the front office.
