A suspect shot a Greenville police officer multiple times during a foot pursuit on Monday, resulting in the department’s first death of an officer in the line of duty in more than 100 years.

Officer Cooper Dawson initiated a traffic stop at about 7:40 p.m. in the 3500 block of Pickett Street, but the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

“While pursuing the suspect behind the address of 3517 Pickett Street, Officer Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times,” the Greenville Police Department press release stated. “Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage, returning fire, and striking the suspect.”

Dawson and the suspect, who has not been publicly identified, were both transported to Hunt County Regional Hospital. Dawson was subsequently airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he died. He was 28 years old. The press release did not comment on the condition of the suspect.
