Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced on September 30 that a jury sentenced a Louisiana man to life in prison without parole for killing a customer outside a Frisco Walmart in 2023.
Jurors found 44-year-old Jhirrell Harris of Monroe, Louisiana, guilty of capital murder following a three-day trial. Judge Benjamin Smith handed down the mandatory sentence.
The case stemmed from a November 15, 2023, shooting at the Walmart on Preston Road. Frisco police officers responded around 9:30 p.m. and found two victims outside the store.
Authorities said Harris fatally shot 62-year-old customer Dung Doan and wounded 22-year-old Zachary Lowe, an Army veteran and Walmart employee on break. Doan had recently immigrated legally to the United States with his family.
Detectives Kyle Marks and Sanja Trtanj led the investigation. They determined that Harris and an accomplice worked together in what began as a robbery. Interviews, forensic evidence, and cellular mapping tied both men to the crime. An anonymous tip to the department’s 411Tip line also aided the case.
Cell phone records and social media evidence showed the accomplice brought Harris from Monroe to a Collin County residence one week before the shooting. Investigators said those records placed the accomplice’s phone near the Walmart during the attack. Harris and his accomplice fled to Monroe the next day. Twenty-four days later, Harris fired the murder weapon again in Louisiana.
Willis said Harris’ actions devastated two families and endangered the community.
“Harris was a menace whose cold-blooded violence stole the life of an innocent man and left a young Army veteran wounded outside a neighborhood Walmart,” Willis stated after sentencing. “Collin County and beyond are safer tonight with him locked up for good.”
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Dewey Mitchell and Christina Skipper prosecuted the case. They received support from District Attorney Investigator Laurie Gibbs and Victim Assistance Coordinator Melissa White.
