A routine traffic stop in Frisco escalated Wednesday when police arrested a wanted capital murder suspect who fled on foot through a residential neighborhood.

Jonathan Elizalde, 21, of Dallas, was found hiding under bushes after jumping fences to evade officers. The arrest occurred around 4:22 p.m. near the 300 block of Stonebrook Parkway.

The case underscores the unpredictable dangers officers face during routine traffic stops. Elizalde was wanted in Dallas County for capital murder and theft charges, according to authorities.

The incident began when a Frisco officer allegedly smelled marijuana during the stop. While waiting for backup, the officer had both occupants exit the vehicle.

Elizalde fled on foot into an adjacent neighborhood. Officers launched drones and conducted a ground search, discovering marijuana and a handgun in the abandoned vehicle.

A nearby resident called police after spotting a man jump their fence. Officers found Elizalde hiding under bushes a short time later.

The driver, Genccis Barrientos Echeverria, 25, of Garland, was arrested for marijuana possession and unlawful firearm possession. Police said she had a prior felony conviction.

Both suspects were booked into the Frisco Detention Facility without incident. Elizalde faces an additional charge for evading arrest.

“This arrest highlights the unknowns and dangers that officers face on any given call or traffic stop,” said Frisco Police Chief David Shilson. “This was great work by our officers for their quick actions and use of the tools at their disposal to take this violent offender off the streets.”

Shilson also praised the resident who tipped off officers. “Our community is safer today with this murder suspect behind bars,” he said.

Details of the capital murder case remain undisclosed. Elizalde is also charged with theft involving property valued between $2,500 and $30,000.
