A stolen white Chevrolet Camaro crashed into a Fort Worth-based tour bus on Interstate 35 in San Antonio near Leon Creek on Thursday afternoon, killing four people and injuring at least 21 others, including children and seniors.
The collision, which occurred around 2:30 p.m., caused a multi-vehicle wreck that shut down the southbound lanes for hours.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the speeding Camaro struck a trailer attached to the small tour bus, operated by Transportes Guerra, causing the driver to lose control. The bus hit a guardrail, and a tractor-trailer then collided with it, causing the bus to roll onto its side. Several passengers were ejected.
Two bus passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others died at University Hospital. McManus noted that the deceased were older adults.
Of the injured, eight suffered life-threatening conditions, while 13 were treated as a precaution. University Hospital reported treating 15 patients, including four children in good condition, with two in critical condition Thursday night.
McManus confirmed that four suspects fled the Camaro on foot, one reportedly armed with an AK-style rifle. Police have not identified or located them.
Surveillance video obtained by KENS 5 showed two men stealing the Camaro from a Northeast Bexar County driveway earlier this week, but police have not named them as suspects in the crash, and their connection to the incident remains under investigation.
“This is going to be quite an extensive investigation here,” McManus said, per WFAA.
The bus was traveling from Fort Worth to Eagle Pass with scheduled stops in Mexico.
Transportes Guerra identified the bus driver as Jose “Tito” Guerra, whose brother, Miguel Guerra, confirmed to WFAA that Tito died in the crash. Jose Guerra was the owner of the transport company, San Antonio Express News reported.
The company urged loved ones of passengers to contact their hotlines at (830) 319-5168, (862) 109-7187, or (682) 758-1055 for information. The investigation is ongoing as authorities pursue leads.
