A man was taken to the hospital early Wednesday morning after a Fort Worth family reported shooting him as he allegedly tried to break into their home.
According to Fort Worth police, the incident occurred just after midnight on Berke Road following reports of an attempted break-in. The family, still shaken by the ordeal, said they acted to protect themselves when the intruder ignored their warnings to leave.
The homeowner, who asked to remain unidentified, recounted being awakened by loud noises outside.
“I heard banging like someone was trying to get in,” she told NBC 5.
She described the unsettling damage done around their property, noting how the man had already removed parts of their wood fence to gain access.
The attempted break-in quickly escalated as the suspect allegedly threw rocks at the home’s windows and even broke the window of their daughter’s room using a fence plank.
“He broke our daughter’s room window, yeah,” she explained to NBC 5, adding to the family’s distress and urgency to act.
The family tried shouting at the man to leave, but when he attempted to enter through their kitchen door, the homeowner’s husband fired at him.
“Instead of going out, he tried to come in through our kitchen door, so that’s when we had to protect ourselves,” she said, emphasizing the fear they felt for their safety.
Police arrived shortly after and found the suspect nearby with two gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, although authorities have not released further details about his condition or possible charges.
Reflecting on the experience, the homeowner expressed relief that her family was unharmed despite the difficult choice they had to make.
“It feels bad that we had to do this to protect ourselves,” she told the NBC affiliate. “But we feel good in a way also because if my husband didn’t do that, something else would have happened.”
