A felon with multiple convictions is facing more than 16 years in prison for a violent bank robbery in Garland.

Damon Johnson, 51, was sentenced to 200 months – around 16.7 years – in federal prison on December 9, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. He allegedly robbed PNC Bank in Garland in November 2024.

“The swift actions of FBI Dallas Violent Crime Task Force agents took this violent repeat offender off the streets,” said U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Ryan Raybould in a press release. “We will continue to pursue lengthy federal prison sentences for those like him to deter these types of crime sprees and restore safety.”

Johnson was arrested and charged in December 2024, and he pleaded guilty to bank robbery in May 2025, according to the release. He had previous convictions for drug and firearm possession.

Johnson reportedly robbed PNC Bank on North Glenbrook Drive in Garland on November 14, 2024.

“As a customer was conducting business at a teller station inside the bank, Johnson grabbed her from behind and held her hostage,” the release reads. “Johnson then pointed a firearm at the teller and demanded money.”

The teller then gave Johnson $3,900 from the register, and he fled on foot. At the time, he was on federal supervised release for two previous crimes.

Johnson had been convicted of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and he was sentenced to 130 months – or 10.8 years – in federal prison, according to the release. He also served another 10-year sentence for possessing a gun as a convicted felon.

Even earlier, in 1991, Johnson was convicted in Michigan of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder –  “which involved Johnson raping a woman and setting her on fire.”

The FBI-Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force investigated this case, and Asst. U.S. Attorney Marissa Aulbaugh led the prosecution.

“The sentence received by the defendant is a result of the efforts of the Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force to hold accountable a felon with a violent criminal history,” said FBI-Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock in the release. “The FBI will continue to work alongside our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to fight violent crime.”

In July, a judge sentenced a different suspect to 10 years in federal prison for “jugging,” after he followed an ATM technician around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, then robbed him in Midlothian, as The Dallas Express reported. The suspect was part of a Houston-area robbery crew.

That same month, an “armed serial robber” from Fort Worth was sentenced to 60 years in prison, as The Dallas Express also reported. He had allegedly robbed five cash loan stores across the metroplex.
