FBI Announces Arrest In Long-Stalled January 6 Pipe Bomb Investigation

On Thursday, the FBI announced the arrest of Brian Cole Jr., 30, the suspect accused of planting pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021.

Cole was taken into custody during an early morning sting at his home in Woodbridge, Virginia, where investigators continue to search his residence as of press time.

A few details surrounding the arrest were laid out during a Department of Justice press conference, where Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared alongside FBI Director Kash Patel, Deputy Director Dan Bongino, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, and other high-ranking officials involved in the case.

Bondi notably criticized the lack of progress in the years following the incident, saying the case had “languished for four years” before the current investigative team renewed its efforts to track down Cole.

Patel and other FBI officials claim that the arrest followed months of re-examining the stalled case, despite there allegedly being no single new tip or sudden breakthrough.

Cole now faces a collection of federal charges for the use of an explosive device, along with charges related to transporting explosives and “attempted malicious destruction” of property. However, additional charges may accrue as the investigation continues.

The devices themselves, pipe bombs packed with black powder, nails, and nine-volt batteries, were discovered around 1 p.m. on January 6, 2021, outside the RNC and DNC offices on South Capitol Street, as previously reported by DX.

Surveillance footage later released by the FBI showed a masked individual wearing gloves and Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers placing the bombs roughly 16 hours earlier, around 8 p.m. on January 5.

The bombs were reportedly fitted with one-hour timers that had already expired by the time they were found. While they did not pose an immediate detonation risk, their discovery contributed to the rising tension surrounding the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

For nearly five years, investigators reviewed thousands of tips and millions of data points with little progress on the case.

A congressional review later found that some reasonable leads dried up within weeks of the January 6 event. The lack of progress fueled widespread speculation about the case, with some rumors spreading about why there had been no updates whatsoever in the past few years.

In November, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) even said that he was “99% certain” that the January 6 pipe bombs were planted as part of an inside operation carried out by the Capitol Police.

Patel and Bongino say the case was revived through what they described as a full reassessment of the investigative database. A newly assembled team of agents and analysts from the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force reportedly reviewed more than three million records, including phone data, CCTV footage, and purchase histories at retail stores related to common bomb-making components.

Pirro said the work required “exhaustive coordination” across multiple investigative agencies, including the ATF, the Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department.

Reporters pressed officials on potential motives during Thursday’s press conference, but Patel and company declined to comment or offer much further detail during the Q&A, citing the ongoing investigation.

However, a recent media report, highlighted in an X post by Collin Rugg posted on December 4, suggests that he may have held “anarchist leanings.”

Bondi said only that evidence had been “sitting there collecting dust” before the renewed review and that the case had found some new footing and progression with the Trump administration’s help.

As the FBI continues its search in Woodbridge of Cole’s home, prosecutors are preparing for the next steps in the case. Pirro said her office intends to pursue the case “across the finish line” and will release further information to the public once the court legally permits it.

For Washington, the long-awaited arrest closes a chapter in one of the most persistent unsolved crimes of that frightful week in 2021.
