A horrific, deadly crash in Florida has reignited the debate over sanctuary-city policies and state-issued driver’s licenses for illegal aliens.

As seen in a horrifying viral video online, Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old illegal alien from India, attempted an illegal U-turn while driving a semi-truck on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce last week. His trailer jackknifed, and a minivan plowed into the commercial semi-truck’s trailer, killing all three passengers inside – according to the Florida Highway Patrol, after Singh made the blatantly illegal turn across a high-speed lane of traffic.

“3 innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom’s California DMV issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver’s License. This gut wrenching tragedy should have never happened. My team at DHS will work with USDOT to root out and prevent illegal aliens from obtaining these licenses from sanctuary jurisdictions that put American drivers and passengers in danger,” Secretary Kristi Noem posted earlier this week.

Singh now faces three counts of vehicular homicide and has been detained by ICE, awaiting deportation proceedings.

According to the DHS, Singh crossed into the United States illegally through California in 2018. He was arrested shortly afterwards for unknown reasons near San Isidro but was released after claiming he was “afraid to return to India.” Despite being placed in immigration court proceedings after being caught in California, he remained in the country on bond, just long enough to secure a California commercial driver’s license.

As of August, nineteen states, including California, still issue driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, per AP News. In response, some states have increasingly moved to restrict such licenses, saying they encourage illegal immigration and undermine public safety.

Florida, under Gov. Ron DeSantis, became the first state in 2023 to ban recognition of certain out-of-state licenses issued to undocumented immigrants. Wyoming and Tennessee have since followed with similar measures, and several more Republican-controlled legislatures are now considering doing the same.

The recent crash in Florida has intensified calls for stricter immigration enforcement. When tragic incidents like Singh’s make headlines, particularly when he shows no emotional reaction to the immediate deaths of three Americans, there is growing momentum for more stringent laws.

“How many more innocent people have to die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the American public?” The DHS asked in a social media post following the crash.
