An illegal border crosser in Texas tried to outrun federal agents on an electric bike—and failed.
U.S. Border Patrol Chief for the Del Rio Sector posted to X on May 4 that “Brackettville Station recently caught an illegal alien trying to evade agents after he crossed into our country. This subject thought he could outrun and outsmart agents by using an electric bike and other supplies. It didn’t work, and he now faces prosecution under 8 USC 1325.”
The agency’s Facebook account shared a similar update: “Del Rio Sector would like to thank this law breaker for proving that there is never a shortage of new tactics people will use to illegally enter the U.S.”
The suspect is expected to be prosecuted under 8 USC 1325, a federal statute that penalizes entering the United States illegally. The text of the law says, “Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.”
The unusual case comes amid a flurry of recent border activity in Texas. In a separate incident, agents at the Eagle Pass crossing seized 1k pounds of methamphetamine, worth $10 million, being smuggled into the country, according to recent reporting from The Dallas Express. The drugs were found hidden in a vehicle’s external fuel tank and turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Meanwhile, removals have surged since January. Nearly 150,000 deportations have been carried out in the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s return to office, per The Dallas Express.
