An officer and his K9 partner were wounded and a suspect was killed in a shootout overnight in Dallas on Thursday.
Dallas police received a call about family violence in the 2900 block of Cypress Avenue at about 9:45 p.m. on April 27, according to a DPD news release.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the suspect had shot two people at the home and then fled the scene.
The two victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police began searching for the suspect in a nearby wooded area near Cypress and Briggs. A police helicopter and a police Canine Unit were called in to help with the search.
Around 2:30 a.m., a Canine Unit police officer and his K9 partner were shot by the suspect, who was hiding in a creek bed in the wooded area.
The officer was hit at least twice by gunfire, and the K9 was also struck by gunfire at least once, according to police.
The officer was able to return fire, striking the suspect, police said. It is unclear how many shots the officer fired and how many times the suspect was hit.
Both the officer and his K9 partner were treated for their injuries. The officer was transported to a local hospital, while the K9 was transported to a local emergency veterinarian, police said.
Neither one sustained any life-threatening injuries.
The Dallas Police Department provided an update on the suspect Friday afternoon.
“The suspect in Friday’s officer-involved shooting died from his injuries,” the update read. The police department has not publicly identified the injured officer and has not released the name of the suspect.
The investigation is ongoing. The DPD said it will provide a further update on Monday and will release bodycam footage of the incident, which is the third officer-involved shooting this year.
The shooting incident took place in Dallas City Councilman Adam Bazaldua’s District 7. Bazaldua has been named The Dallas Express Crime Boss of the Month multiple times due to increasing crime in his district.
Murder in Dallas continues to climb, seeing an increase of 22% year to date, according to the Dallas Police Department’s Daily Crime Brief.
