After a years-long collaborative investigation, law enforcement officers arrested a man suspected of sexual assault in Texas and Oklahoma.
Hunter Mackey, 27, faces a first-degree rape charge after the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) took him into custody on February 17 in McLoud. He remains in the Pottawatomie County Jail.
The case dates to October 10, 2021, when a woman in Fannin County, Texas, reported a sexual assault. She told Fannin County Sheriff’s Office investigators she met the suspect through social media. He picked her up in a sedan with Oklahoma plates, drove her to a location, and sexually assaulted her.
Investigators sent DNA evidence to the DPS Crime Laboratory in Garland for entry into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database linking arrestees to unsolved cases. Two months later, a possible match surfaced with a similar assault in Ardmore, Oklahoma, handled by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and the Ardmore Police Department.
The Texas Rangers coordinated with Oklahoma law enforcement on a familial DNA search through the DPS Crime Laboratory Division. That effort produced no matches, and no arrests followed.
In August 2024, the Ardmore case evidence was sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) program. Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance, the initiative supports agencies nationwide in pursuing unsolved sexual assaults and related homicides.
Using SAKI grant money, the sample was sent to Bode Technology for DNA testing and genealogy work, which led to the identification of three brothers as potential suspects in September 2025, authorities said.
Further DNA comparisons from the Fannin County and Ardmore kits confirmed a match with Mackey. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) then tracked him down for arrest.
The Texas Rangers emphasized the role of interagency collaboration in resolving the case. The department recognized the Ardmore Police Department, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, DPS Crime Laboratory in Garland, and Bode Technology.
