The Denton Police Department is warning the public to beware of a scammer impersonating an officer and requesting money.
“Denton PD will never solicit payments over the phone,” said Denton police Media Representative Lacy Fenn to The Dallas Express. “We also encourage residents to trust their instincts.”
Someone has reportedly been impersonating a Denton police sergeant over the phone, demanding money, officials announced on November 12. The department said officers will never solicit payments over the phone.
“Stay vigilant, Denton,” the department posted.
If residents feel uneasy about a call, they should hang up and dial the Denton police non-emergency line at 940-349-8181, according to Fenn.
“We have had incidents where residents have fallen victim to scams, not just this one,” she said. “We also encourage our community members to let their loved ones know about scams, especially if they may be vulnerable to these predatory tactics.”
The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office warned the public in September that scammers were using a similar tactic, impersonating its employees and demanding money, as reported by The Dallas Express at the time. In some cases, the sheriff’s Cyber Crimes Unit acted quickly and froze the scammers’ accounts before they could steal the money for good.
The Dallas Police Department also urged vigilance against a similar scam in July, where a man impersonating a sergeant called residents demanding money, as The Dallas Express also reported. In August, the Garland Police Department arrested a Frisco woman for duping an elderly couple out of $25,000.
