A domestic dispute over child visitation turned deadly Sunday night in Slaton, Texas, when a man killed two relatives before taking his own life; two others remain critically injured.

The small city sits about 15 miles southeast of Lubbock in the High Plains region.

George Cantu, 27, entered a home at 335 E. Floyd St. armed with a handgun at 10:52 p.m. on January 11. Police say he was upset about ongoing issues with his common-law ex-wife, Jasmine Rivas, 24.

Cantu shot Rivas and Isaiah Chapa, 20, before fatally shooting his cousins, Marisol Ramirez, 18, and Araceli Valdez, 23. He then turned the gun on himself.

Both Rivas and Chapa were rushed to University Medical Center with critical injuries. Their current conditions have not been released.

The Slaton Police Department confirmed alcohol was a factor in the shooting.

The Metro Crimes Unit has taken over as the lead investigative agency. Police are treating the case as a double capital murder-suicide.
