A Dallas police officer has been fired over an off-duty misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia terminated Officer Javier Granados, completing a disciplinary process that lasted eight months. The incident occurred in November 2022.

Granados was terminated for “escalating a disturbance which resulted in a police response, and engaging in adverse conduct when he was arrested for Assault Bodily Injury — Family Violence,” Garcia said.

The officer, who has been with Dallas police since September 2019, has the right to appeal the decision.

Before the firing, Granados was on administrative leave, Dallas police said in a news release at the time.

No other details about the incident were released.

The termination comes amid an alarming police shortage at the Dallas Police Department, which does not have roughly 900 of the 4,000 officers needed to police the city effectively, per a City analysis stating that Dallas needs about three officers for every 1,000 residents.
