Dallas police are investigating the death of a suspect who died after suffering a medical emergency at the city jail Sunday night. The man had been arrested earlier that evening following a shooting incident in South Dallas.
Officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 10:25 p.m. on September 21 in the 1600 block of S. Hampton Road. Police say the suspect was attempting to enter a home when one shot was fired.
The man was arrested for criminal mischief at the scene. Dallas Fire Rescue transported him to a local hospital for treatment of what police described as a superficial injury.
After receiving medical treatment, officers took the suspect to Lew Sterrett Jail. While in jail, the man suffered a medical emergency.
Dallas Fire Rescue transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released the suspect’s identity or the nature of the medical emergency.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will conduct its own investigation into the death. The Office of Community Police Oversight has also been notified.
The investigation remains ongoing under case number 136621-2025.
