A suspected serial rapist named Christopher Michael Green, 52, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault, according to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.
“During the punishment phase, evidence of five additional violent assaults allegedly committed by Mr. Green was presented, along with powerful testimony from the survivors— four of whom were between the ages of 15-17 at the time of their attacks,” reads a press release published by the DA’s office.
In Dallas proper, there have been 411 sexual assaults committed this year as of August 19, according to the City of Dallas crime analytics dashboard.
The Dallas Police Department has been dealing with a serious staffing shortage for years. Only around 3,000 officers are currently in the field, despite a prior City analysis advising that a force of roughly 4,000 is needed to properly police a city the size of Dallas.
For its part, the Dallas City Council approved a budget of only $654 million for DPD this fiscal year, considerably less taxpayer money than what is being spent on public safety in other high-crime cities, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Here’s some of what WFAA reported on Green’s trial and sentencing:
A 52-year-old man found guilty of aggravated assault will spend the rest of his life in prison in the first Dallas County jury trial to use investigative genetic genealogy.
The defendant, Christopher Michael Green, was charged in a 2005 cold case of raping a young mother at knifepoint.
“We have been working this case with the Dallas Police Department since we started the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) almost a decade ago,” said lead prosecutor Leighton D’Antoni in a statement.
“I remember long-time Dallas Police Department Sex Assaults Detective Todd Haecker telling me this was his ‘white whale.’ We exhausted every investigative tool without success until the DA’s Office and DPD began working with the FBI Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force, which finally cracked this case.”
