Border Patrol agents arrested a sex offender trying to cross the border illegally – again.
Agents arrested Jesus Jaime Saavedra-Orozco, a Mexican national, near the border town of Hidalgo on June 23, according to a press release. He had sexually assaulted a child in 2001 and was “attempting to illegally re-enter the United States.”
Border patrol agents arrested Saavedra-Orozco during “routine border security operations,” according to the release. Then, “record checks” showed he was a registered sex offender, previously convicted for aggravated sexual assault of a child in Hidalgo County in 2001. At the time, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
“The apprehension of this dangerous individual demonstrates our agents’ unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from those who would cause harm to our most vulnerable citizens,” said Gloria Chavez, chief patrol agent of the Rio Grande sector, in the release.
The Alamo Police Department, near the border city of McAllen, arrested Saavedra-Orozco in 2001 after he reportedly sexually assaulted the child on July 27 of that year, according to jail records. Per the sex offender registry, Saavedra-Orozco’s victim was an 11-year-old boy. He reportedly committed aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child by contact.
Even earlier, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested him in 1993 for vehicle burglary and theft, according to jail records.
Saavedra-Orozco is currently in “federal custody,” according to the release, awaiting “criminal prosecution for immigration violations.”
Immigration enforcement arrested two previously convicted sex offenders last week, trying to smuggle illegals deeper into America, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. Also that week, agents seized drugs disguised as candy and busted an El Paso “stash house” for human smugglers.
