Three young children, ages 3, 2, and 1, guided police to the bodies of their parents following a suspected murder-suicide at a west Houston apartment complex..
The couple, both 26, was found dead on August 18 with gunshot wounds after the children were discovered seeking food outside the complex.
Police received a call just after 5 p.m. from neighbors who noticed the children sitting in the heat for hours, with temperatures reaching a high of 97 degrees, according to weather reports.
The children informed officers that their parents were dead inside the apartment, where authorities found the unnamed man and woman, Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department told KHOU 11. Crowson said it appeared the man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself, with both likely dead for about 24 hours.
The children were unharmed and have been placed in the care of their grandmother, police noted. Child Protective Services is also involved in the case.
A neighbor told reporters that the woman had previously tried to leave her husband before the shooting incident.
“She came over a few times, asking to use the phone. I would talk to her, try to tell her, ‘Hey, it’s not worth it,’ ” Deborah McMillan told ABC 13 Eyewitness News. “Her main thing is that she didn’t want to leave because of the kids.
