A Dallas man led firefighters on a slow-speed chase early Monday morning in an SUV on three wheels that was filled with volleyballs.
The incident began around 2 a.m. near Oak Lawn Avenue and Hi-Line Drive when Dallas firefighters responded to reports of a smoking vehicle, possibly on fire. Upon arrival, they found a man inside a white Jeep Cherokee with deployed airbags and a crumpled front left wheel.
When firefighters attempted a welfare check, the man fled in the damaged SUV, according to police. The suspect drove slowly, with the vehicle’s front end tilting and sparks flying from the folded wheel. He navigated several Dallas streets, making multiple U-turns, before stopping in a parking lot on Oak Lawn Avenue.
Dallas police, called to assist, detained the man after he pulled over. A DWI enforcement officer conducted a field sobriety test, leading to his arrest.
Following the arrest, authorities discovered the SUV was packed with volleyballs. The reason for the volleyballs, the cause of the airbag deployment, and the damage to the wheel remain unclear. The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed.
