Police captured a robbery suspect after a manhunt in Denton earlier this week.
Officers arrested 24-year-old Corey Momot for robbery on June 16, according to Amy Cunningham, public information liaison for the Denton Police Department. Momot fled from a traffic stop in northeast Denton, but officers captured him after a search.
Momot faces charges of robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawfully discharging a firearm, and evading arrest with previous convictions, according to jail records. He is currently in the Denton County Jail.
According to Cunningham, a Denton police officer recognized Momot near 2700 Emerson Lane on June 16. While the officer was waiting for backup, Momot left the scene, so police pulled him over on Old North Road near Mill Pond Road.
“Momot fled during the traffic stop, running toward Emerson Lane before jumping several fences toward Cooper Creek,” Cunningham said. “Officers set up a perimeter and requested K9 assistance from local agencies.”
During the manhunt, Denton police told the public to “avoid the area.” Nearby residents used the Ring app to warn neighbors to lock their doors as police were “looking for a suspect that fled.”
A K9 unit with the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office ultimately found Momot, “who had concealed himself in brush and dirt near Cooper Creek,” according to Cunningham.
Momot was wanted by the Corinth Police Department on a robbery warrant, according to Cunningham, and jail records show he allegedly committed the offense on June 7. Cunningham also said Momot was the suspect in an incident where “a gunshot was fired at an apartment complex pool” on June 12, though no injuries or damage were reported.
After arresting him on the robbery warrant, Denton police added charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm, Cunningham said. Jail records show Momot’s robbery charge carries a $20,000 bond, and the rest of the charges each carry a $5,000 bond.
Momot has a long criminal history in Denton County going back to 2018, according to jail records.
Denton County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Momot in June 2020 for charges including assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, burglary of a motor vehicle, and more, according to jail records. He was released on July 3 of that year after posting a bond.
Deputies also arrested him in February 2021 for charges including a “terroristic threat,” possession of drug paraphernalia, and more. He was released on May 11 that year.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers arrested Momot in October 2021 for charges including violating bond and “bail jumping.” He was released on November 22, 2022. Momot has been arrested various other times in the past.
