For the second time in three months, Chad West claims the title of “Crime Boss of the Month.” West is the representative for Dallas City Council District 1. Based on the statistics from March 2022 compared to March 2021, crime increased by 13% in West’s district, making him April’s honoree.

Councilmember Paula Blackmon’s District 9 followed closely behind, with an increase in crime of 12.74%.

The Dallas Express, The People’s Paper, believes that important information, such as crime rates and trends in the city, should be easily accessible to you.

Many are unaware that Dallas has more crime per capita than hotspots like Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York, according to data from the FBI’s UCR database.

“Crime Boss of the Month” is a monthly title given by The Dallas Express to the Dallas City Council member whose district illustrates the most significant percentage increase (or most minor decrease) in crime.

West has served on the Dallas City Council as a member of District 1 since June 2019 and is now the Mayor Pro Tempore. District 1 includes the Bishop Arts District and West Oak Cliff.

West was named “Crime Boss of the Month” for January as District 1 saw 90 more crimes committed in December 2021 than in December 2020. Now, he has earned the title again, as data shows 25 more crimes were reported in March 2022 than in March 2021.

The most noticeable change was in the Motor Vehicle Theft category, increasing from 113 reports in March 2021 to 150 in March 2022. The runner-up was Burglary, with 19 reported instances in March 2021 shooting up to 50 in 2022.

The following are the other increases in crime in District 1 when comparing March 2021 to March 2022:

  • Robbery: Increased by nine from 2021, nineteen versus eight.
  • Assault Offenses: Increased by five, thirty-eight versus thirty-three.
  • Weapon Violations: Increased by two from 2021, twelve versus ten.
  • Arson: Increased by two, three versus one.

The Dallas Express reached out to West’s office for comment but received no response.
