After a stunning turn-around, the San Francisco 49ers won in overtime against the Los Angeles Rams, who once held the top seed in the NFC. Instead, the Rams will drop to the number four seed, giving Dallas a matchup against the 49ers.
With the upset win, the 49ers took the sixth seed in the NFC and avoided elimination from the competition. The 49ers won on the performance of their running game, turning to quarterback Jimmy Garappolo in overtime to secure the win. Like Dallas, the 49ers’ defense has been essential in winning close games and turning the tide on critical drives.
The Cowboys could have moved from the number four seed to the number two seed with losses by Arizona, LA Rams, and Tampa Bay. Arizona lost to Seattle, and the 49ers defeated the Rams, but Tampa Bay crushed the Carolina Panthers, pushing the Cowboys into the third seed.
The NFL has yet to announce the schedule for the first-ever Super Wild Card Weekend to include games on a Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The NFC playoff seedings are set. Green Bay wrapped up the number one seed last week. The Buccaneers victory on Sunday gave the team the number two seed. The Cowboys are now number three. The number four seed will be the LA Rams. Five, six, and seven belong to Arizona, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, respectively.
The AFC seeding will depend on the outcome of the Sunday Night game featuring the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders.
