The death of a UPS vendor occurred as a result of the victim purportedly falling into a trash compactor at a UPS facility in Dallas on Thursday.

According to public-facing records maintained by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there have been 107 serious work-related injuries or deaths involving a trash compactor between January 2005 and October 2023.

The figure seems quite low and obviously does not include the tragedy that befell the UPS vendor. It is unclear just how many individuals fall into trash compactors while on the job in the United States.

OSHA’s stats also do not include people who are not working with or around a trash compactor at the time of an accident, such as when a homeless man who was sleeping in a dumpster was crushed to death in Fort Worth in 2012, per the Dallas Observer.

Here’s what WFAA had to say about the latest incident:

“Dallas Fire-Rescue officials in a news release said they were dispatched shortly before 11 a.m. to a UPS facility at 10155 Monroe Drive in Northwest Dallas, where someone reportedly ‘fell into a trash compactor.’

“The fire department’s search and rescue crew responded and got the man out, but he died at the scene, officials said.

“UPS officials said in a statement that the man was a vendor for UPS and that the company was ‘working with authorities’ to investigate the incident.”
