A Texas man who fatally shot a person who pulled into his driveway was indicted by a grand jury for first-degree murder on February 9.

CBS 11 News reports that police said 65-year-old Terry Turner shot Adil Dghoughi, an immigrant from Morocco, as he was backing out of the driveway at Turner’s home in Martindale, about 30 miles south of Austin.

While Turner told a 911 operator that he was acting in self-defense as the driver had pulled a gun on him, investigators said that no firearm was found in the car. The shooting took place in October 2021.

Authorities said that a bullet shot by Turner went through Dghoughi’s raised hand and then hit him in the head, killing him.

Investigators said that they do not believe Turner and Dghoughi knew each other. Dghoughi, 31, immigrated to the U.S. in 2012 in search of better education, according to what his mother, Fatiha Haouass, told the Austin American-Statesman.

According to CBS 11 News, Turner was not arrested until a week after the incident, despite his admission of the shooting to deputies. Dghoughi’s family and friends said that the charge was finally filed after they had expressed concern about the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office’s handling of the case.
