According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the suspected gunman has now been identified as 49-year-old John Edward Gordon, and was arrested on March 3.

Bonner was transported to a hospital, where he died.

According to the affidavit, Bonner’s brother, who was a passenger in the car, told officers that Bonner drove to an apartment complex at the address and then exited the car alone. According to the brother, when Bonner returned to the car, he was followed by a woman, who was yelling at him, and a man holding a gun.

Bonner’s brother said that the man with a gun fired at the car twice or thrice. The victim’s brother then got out of the car as the vehicle rolled across the street and hit an electrical pole. The gunman allegedly told Bonner’s brother that Bonner had taken something that belonged to him and failed to pay him the $5 for it.

According to the affidavit, another witness said that Bonner had gone to meet Gordon, who was apparently sitting in a car and waiting for him. The witness claimed Gordon then gave Bonner a small vial of PCP, while Bonner in turn dropped marijuana into the car and walked away. According to the witness’ account, Gordon yelled at Bonner as he left, saying Bonner owed him $5, then went after Bonner and opened fire.

Investigators also said that an anonymous tipster called the day after the shooting to say that Gordon was responsible, referring to the 49-year-old by his street name.

Gordon was booked into the Dallas County jail on March 3. He is charged with murder, as well as unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, and delivery of a controlled substance.
