The driver of a pickup truck stalled on a Dallas freeway last Wednesday, at risk due to a fire and other oncoming traffic, was saved by an off-duty officer.

The truck got stuck in the eastbound lanes of East R.L. Thornton Freeway near Jim Miller Road. Police reported to WFAA that the driver was calling for help as others hit her truck on the freeway.

An unknown helper whom some called a “Good Samaritan” pulled the driver from her vehicle just before the truck caught fire.

It was reported initially that the helper was an off-duty officer. The next day, September 29, Parkland Hospital identified him as Henry Vargas, an officer with the Dallas County Hospital District Police Department.

The incident is still under investigation, as it is unknown why the truck stalled and caught fire.
