Parents in a Mesquite neighborhood are worried that speeding drivers are endangering their children as they walk to and from school.

Brenda Salinas, a stay-at-home mom, has been vocal about her concerns regarding school zone safety.

Salinas, whose children attend elementary, middle, and high schools in Mesquite, said the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Peachtree Road near Lanny Frasier Middle School is of great concern. She added that the children and crossing guard are “almost being run over all the time.”

According to Salinas, part of the issue might be that speeding drivers are unaware they are in a school zone.

“We have signs, but they’re very small for the people to see, obviously, if they’re still speeding,” Salinas told NBC 5 News. “My concern is the kids that cross every day after school and before school.”

Even though her kids don’t walk to school, Salinas said she worries about other kids, explaining she sees close calls several times a week.

In response to a request for comment, Mesquite ISD explained, “The City of Mesquite is responsible for traffic evaluations and the installation of safety devices such as flashing lights and other signs.”

However, the district said now that it knows there are concerns, it will begin the process of alerting the city authorities to see if there are specific conditions that can be addressed.

The district added that its students’ safety will always be a priority, and it will do all it can to provide a safe environment at its campuses.
