Due to the arrival of winter storms and freezing conditions in North Texas, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines suspended all February 3 flights in and out of Dallas Love Field.
According to The Dallas Morning News, Southwest has issued travel advisories for thirteen airports in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Texas.
Southwest issued the advisory in anticipation of the winter storm that would likely see temperatures drop into the 20s and even teens between February 3 and February 4.
Southwest Airlines, headquartered at Love Field, also canceled all its scheduled flights in St. Louis Lambert International Airport for February 2, but operations resumed February 3.
According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, Southwest had 352 flights out of Love Field scheduled for February 3 and 162 flights in St. Louis a day prior.
In a statement, Southwest Airlines revealed that its operation planners are carefully tracking winter storm Landon as it travels eastward across the country and making necessary adjustments to its schedule.
However, other airlines such as Delta Airlines and Alaska Airlines still have flights scheduled for February 3 at Love Field, according to the airport’s spokesman Chris Perry.
Perry revealed that Love Field would remain open with airfield crews working to ensure the field remains operational.
Southwest Airlines’ counterpart, American Airlines, preemptively canceled around three hundred of its scheduled flights arriving and departing out of DFW International Airport for February 3, according to Flightaware.com. The three hundred flights amounted to 25% of the Fort Worth-based airline’s schedule for that day.
“This week’s winter storm is expected to have a significant impact on our operation, especially in the Northeast and Central regions of the United States,” American Airlines spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said in a statement. “The vast majority of impacted flights have been canceled in advance so we could proactively notify and accommodate our customers and avoid last-minute disruptions at the airport.”
So far, American Airlines has canceled more than 800 flights due to the storm.
